In this two-book series, popular clinician and author Jody Fisher clarifies and simplifies the art of creating an arrangement and improvising as a solo guitarist. In his easy-to-understand and enjoyable style, this master of solo guitar teaches all of the theory, technique and arranging skills students need to start a lifelong journey as a solo guitarist. Fisher 2 art solo

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the second book in this two-book series. Before you begin working in Book 2, it is important to make sure that the information and skills covered in Book I are thoroughly understood
and well under your fingers. You should also have at least a small solo repertoire prepared.
As you learn and work with the concepts presented in this book, it will be helpful to have songs to
which these skills can be applied. This is the only way you can integrate new ideas into your playing and make them truly your own.
As you page through this book, you will notice that there are quite a few musical examples. All the
theory in the world is useless until you hear the ideas in context. I believe that the best way to learn how to play is to play-a lot! For this reason, I have tried to keep the verbiage to a minimum. You will need to be able to play the examples well to hear their full effect. Expect to spend plenty of time practicing the pieces in this book.
Fingerings are shown only where I felt they were necessary to give you the basic idea. Since much
of this book is about solo guitar improvisation, absolute fingerings have been avoided and many will be up to you to find. This is because in an improvisational situation, one's ideas are rarely conceived much more than a few measures in advance. Fingering, as well as actual chord voicings and melodies, are executed on the fly. Creating ways to get from pointA to point B is a large part of improvising solo guitar. If you have done the usual technical exercises required to prepare for this kind of playing, you are probably ready for this material. If not, this will become apparent soon enough.
There is a certain dichotomy to writing out examples of "improvised" solos. Musical events occur
in improvisation that cannot be duplicated on paper. Indeed, the whole idea of spontaneous playing
suggests a trusting of the moment. Writing musical ideas out pretty much negates that whole concept. Be that as it may, these examples express tools and thought processes that need to be learned in order for that spontaneous "magic" to happen. These examples are not meant to be hot licks that will impress and amaze your friends. Rather, the concepts behind them are intended to be integrated into your body of knowledge. The actual musical examples are simply illustrations to help you catalog the sounds that are possible when these concepts are applied.
One or two books cannot possibly cover the entire realm of solo guitar, so I would like to recommend other books I have written that are good companions to this series. Together, with The Art ofSolo Guitar, they deliver much of the important information that is eventually needed for a comprehensive understanding of this style:
Mastering jazz Guitar: Chord Melody, for more arranging ideas and techniques Mastering jazz Guitar: Improvisation, for more information on soloing 30-Day Guitar Workout to make sure your hands are up to the task jazz Licks Encyclopedia for more melodic vocabulary Remember that you need to listen to quite a bit of solo guitar to become aware of all the possibilities.
This includes players from the jazz, acoustic and classical worlds. You really can't listen too much.
With all this said, the most important aspect of all this is to enjoy the process of learning and discovering the joy and intimacy of solo guitar.
