THE ART OF ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR: THE BASICS. W. Mann. DVD TABLATURE

Book/DVD pack. Woody shows you practical ways to develop fundamental technique and offers insights into the musical logic of blues guitar. Learn blues in the keys of D,G,C,E and A, from masters such as Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, more. Each song illustrates how to play melodies and bass lines simultaneously, and how to play off the chords and improvise within a song. Songs include "Old Country Rock," "Saturday Night Rub," "One Time Blues," "Soo Cow Soo," "Pig Meat Strut" and "South Carolina Rag." Beginner level. Note/tab. 23 page book with 82 minute DVD.

WOODY MANN BASICS

This fingerstyle picking is basically a two-line idea. The bass line is played with the thumb, and the treble line is played with the fingers. The goal is to develop an independence of the two parts. The greater the independence, the easier it becomes to negotiate the rhythm and syncopation, and capture the subtleties of the music.
We'll then have the foundation to add many other idiomatic blues guitar techniques, such as, damping, bending, brushing, snapping the strings, etc.
Many of the traditional acoustic blues guitar styles were developed by guitarists imitating the two-handed approach of the piano. Just as the pianist learns to play different parts with each hand, the fingerstyle guitarist must learn to play with the thumb and fingers of the picking hand.
To illustrate the individual lines, the music is written with double stems: up stems for the melody (played with the fingers) and down stems for the bass (played with the thumb).
Developing this technique is a natural step-by-step process. At first, the goal is to playa simple bass on the beat with your thumb while playing a simple melody with your fingers. The next step is to embellish both parts with rhythmic syncopations and melodic variations. The songs featured in this series demonstrate this development-each lesson includes tunes with a simple bass and melody part as well as songs that have more complex picking. It is a good idea to play the songs slowly and keep this two-line idea in mind as you progress through the DVD.
As an example, I have written out a typical twelve-bar ragtime blues verse four different ways. The examples demonstrate some of the methods the melody and bass playoff each other and how they can be embellished, along with chords, to create variations.
In Example 1, the bass is alternating on the beat while a simple melody line is played on top. Notice that in Example 2 the bass remains steady while the melody becomes more rhythmic. Next, Example 3 further develops the rhythmic movement in the bass as well as the melody. Notice the interaction between the two voices: In measures 9 and 10, the bass line has a slightly more syncopated feel and with the use of thumb rolls creates more melodic movement. And finally, Example 4 uses more syncopation, riffs, and broken chords in both parts to create a completely different sounding guitar part from the first example.
This is a brief overview of the picking technique. The lessons in this series go into greater detail and explain, step-by-step, how to achieve this. Developing a good sound and being able to create variations in your playing begins with having a relaxed and strong picking hand. As Gary Davis use to say (about the great ragtime guitarist Blind Blake), "Now he's got a sportin' thumb." Woody Mann

Taught by Woody Mann
The music of Robert Johnson was greatly influenced by Son House, Skip James, Hambone Willie Newbern and Charlie Patton. Melodies and hot licks from the 1920s recordings of Scrapper Blackwell, Lonnie Johnson and Blind Blake can also be heard in Robert Johnson’s recordings. In this three CD series, Woody Mann traces the development of Robert Johnson’s music.

TUNES PRESENTED INCLUDE:
Kokomo Blues, Blue Day Blues, My Black Mama, Devil Got My Woman, Roll And Tumble Blues, Screamin' And Hollerin', Georgia
Bound and Lifesaver Blues.

LESSON ONE:
Scrapper Blackwell was a popular 1920s blues artist who recorded solo as well as countless sides with the great pianist, Leroy Carr. His unique rhythmic style and use of melodic treble licks can be heard in his Kokomo Blues (key of D) and Blue Day Blues (key of A). Robert Johnson freely adapted Scrapper’s techniques to his playing.

LESSON TWO:
Johnson was a teenager when he met and learned from Son House. Son’s My Black Mama was copied by Johnson in his Walkin' Blues. Skip James’s Devil Got My Woman, played in a crossnote tuning, was the basis for Johnson's Hellhound On My Trail. Blind Willie Newbern’s Roll And Tumble Blues was the foundation for Johnson’s Traveling Riverside Blues. Charlie Patton's Screamin' And Hollerin' played in an open G tuning, presents many licks and rhythmic ideas that Johnson used.

LESSON THREE:
The recordings of Lonnie Johnson and Blind Blake influenced bluesmen from the East Coast to Texas to the Mississippi Delta. Blake’s Georgia Bound presents an identical melody to Johnson’s From Four Until Late. Lonnie Johnson’s Lifesaver Blues presents hot licks and a melody used by Johnson.

KENTUCKY THUMBPICKING BLUES FOR GUITAR. Flint. CD TAB.

Product Description:
A collection of 15 intermediate level thumbstyle blues guitar solos in the style developed and played by some of the coal miners of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky and surrounding areas in the early to mid-20th century. Jim Mason and Amos Johnson were two of the early players. The style was picked up and streamlined by Mose Rager and Ike Everly and was the forerunner of the Travis Style. This style can be heard on Merle Travis’ blues recordings. The music is presented in notation and tablature with chord symbols. The performance/demonstration recording is excellent for listening. It contains all 15 tunes with rhythm guitar accompaniment.

WELL-TEMPERED BLUES, 8 new tunes for classical & fingerstyle guitar. W. Beauvais. CD TAB.

Product Description:
The blues present an opportunity to be deeply expressive. Every note can be colored with pitch bends, slides, vibrato, and all manner of attacks. The style makes it easy to own the music, to close your eyes and play as if you wrote it. These pieces are designed to be fun and entertaining as they work through the sharp keys, which are most friendly to the guitar. By working through these keys however, they develop a player's awareness of the different tonalities and the way patterns may be altered to facilitate key changes. Written in notation and tablature.
