About Gary Cook
Flatpicking the acoustic guitar has been referred to as the "full contact sport" of guitar playing. Pushing a heavy gauge pick through medium gauge acoustic guitar strings at break neck speeds while trying to create enough volume to be heard over banjos, mandolins, and fiddles, does indeed require strength, speed, and endurance. Watch the face of most f1atpickers while they are performing on stage and the focus and concentration required to execute their craft is reflected in their steely-eyed gaze. The endurance required to play at blazing tempos for four or five minutes straight is also reflected in the occasional facial grimace. But then there is Gary Cook. Gary makes it all look way too easy. His expression is that of a man taking an afternoon walk in the park, his motion is fluid and flawless. He is making eye contact with the audience and looks like he couldn't be more relaxed. While many f1atpickers appear to be struggling through every solo, Gary appears to be having the time of his life.
Gary's ease and comfort on stage was developed during a lifetime of stage experience. The youngest of four children in a musical family from Ft. Collins, CO, Gary began performing with his siblings, as the Cook J(jds, at the age of four. Gary explains, "I was the youngest of the four kids. My two brothers and my sister played music and I wanted to be involved in what they were doing. Plus, the family wanted to have a full band sound, so I was taught to play the guitar and the bass. We first started playing at family music parties and having family jam sessions." Gary adds, "Our parents never forced us to play music. But my mom played and my aunts and uncles played. We were interested because we believed everyone did it. Playing music just seemed natural" The music that the Cook kids crew up listening to and playing was the country music that was popular on the radio in the early 60s. Around 1965, when Gary was four, the Cook J(jds began playing on a Saturday evening radio program on KLAK out of Denver, Colorado. Their popularity on that show led to their parents booking the kids to play at various venues with other local entertainers. Gary says, "I always knew that I was going to play music for a living. I never wanted to do anything but play the guitar and be an entertainer." In fact, Gary skipped his high school graduation ceremony because he had a paying gig that night!
Gary did more than just learn how to play the guitar. He has evolved into one of the best f1atpicking guitar players in the country, as evidenced by his being one of the few two-time winners of the prestigious National Flatpicking Guitar Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas (Gary won in 1989 and 1996). He has also become a consummate entertainer. For the past fifteen years Gary has played on stage every night of the week from Memorial Day through Labor Day at the Bar-D Chuckwagon in Durango, Colorado, with the house band, the Bar-D Wranglers. The members of the band own the venue-which includes a mock western town, working small-scale railroad, and an indoor/outdoor theater. The band serves dinner to the crowd a sell out crowd of 900, and then performs a delightfully entertaining Western music show.
When asked about his influences on the guitar, Gary points to Roy Nicols, Chet Atkins and Don Rich as having an influence on his playing early on. He said that Glen Campbell and Waylon Jennings were favorites. While in high school Gary met some friends who played bluegrass music and started listening to players like Doc Watson and Charles Sawtelle. Additionally, Gary loved Western swing music and listened to bands like Sons of the Pioneers and Bob Wills. He gained more insights about the guitar from listening to the guitar players with those bands, especially Eldin Shamblin's rhythm work.
For the ten years following high school graduation, Gary played music with a variety of different bluegrass and country bands.
In 1989 he got the job at the Bar-D in Durango and has been there ever since. Since 1989 Gary has released three solo recordings:
Western Standard Time, Now and Then, and Train Classics. He has also recorded twelve projects with the Bar-D Wranglers. The songs presented here in this book, and on the accompanying audio CD, were selected from Gary's three solo projects.
For the first eight years Gary worked at the Bar-D, he spent his summers in Durango while wintering in Arizona and playing with country bands in theater shows there. Gary also spent two of those winters attending classes at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona, to earn a degree in audio engineering. In 1999 he built his own recording studio in Durango and began living there all year around. During the summer he performed with the Wranglers at the Bar-D and during the winter he worked in the studio as a sound engineer.
In the summer of 2002 a monsterous forest fire blazed through the Four Corners area of Colorado. In June, as the fire moved its way towards the town of Durango, Gary and the other Bar D owners worked with fire fighters to keep the fire away from the Bar-D facilities. Unfortunately, as Gary and his wife, Brigette, worked hard to save the Bar-D, the fire consumed their home and recording studio. The fire burned so hot that firefighters could not get to the home to try and save it. By the time they were able to safely move near the home, there was nothing left.
Even after Gary lost all his worldly possessions to fire, he still maintains a positive attitude and outlook. Several days after the fire swept through Durango, Gary was back on stage at the Bar-D. A couple of months later, he was up on stage at the National Flatpicking Championships looking as calm and cool as ever. After months of living in hotel rooms and rented homes, Gary and Brigette are now rebuilding their home and recording studio and life will continue as before. They lost the material things that they owned, but they didn't lose each other and they never lost the music. This book is a tribute to Gary's ever-present positive attitude, his enduring spirit, and his love of music.

Introduction
In the summer of 2002 a series of wild fires raged through southern Colorado. Two-time National Flatpicking Champion Gary Cook's home and recording studio were in the path of one of those fires and were both burnt to the ground. When word of Gary's devastating misfortune reached the flatpicking community dozens of guitar players around the country said, "What can we do to help?" My first thought was to collect money and set up a fund to help Gary and his family. However, upon further consideration, I felt like a better idea would be to produce a project that would highlight Gary's guitar playing, bring enjoyment and instruction to the flatpicking community, and raise money for Gary and his family all at the same time.
Previous to the fire Gary had produced three solo projects. The master discs, and most of the inventory, for these projects were casualties of the fire and thus they were no longer going to be available to the public. I thought that taking selections from all three of these projects, putting them on disc as kind of a "Best of Gary Cook" CD, and packaging the CD with a transcription book would serve to help Gary and his legacy, as well as bring a lot of listening and practicing pleasure to all flatpickers. I contacted Gary and he thought that it was a great idea.
The next thing I did was contact Bill Bay, of Mel Bay Publications, to ask him if he would be willing to publish this project and send all proceeds to Gary. He said, "yes" without hesitation. We want to give a very special thanks to Bill for his generosity. Without his willingness to help, this project would not have been possible.
In order to keep the costs as low as possible, and thus get Gary as much money from sales as possible, I asked a number of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine's contributors if they would volunteer to transcribe some of Gary's solos. Everyone who I asked was glad to help out. Special thanks for transcription work are due to:
Brad Davis, Joe Carr, Adam Granger, Dix Bruce, Steve Kaufman, John McGann, John Carlini, Steve Pottier, and Beppe Gambetta.
Since all of the artists who did the transcription work were extremely busy with their own projects and touring schedule, you will find that some transcriptions in this book are only provided for the first of Gary's solos on the CD. However, there are other tunes where we were able to provide complete transcriptions.
We hope that you enjoy listening to Gary Cook play this selection of standard flatpicking tunes and original compositions. We also hope that you are able to improve your own guitar playing by learning some of Gary's arrangements to these songs.
We also want to wish Gary and Brigette Cook the best of luck in rebuilding their home and recording studio and starting a new life in the aftermath of such a devastating event.

June 20, 2003
Today is the first anniversary of the day our home burned in the Missionary Ridge Fire that swept through the Southwest part of Colorado. After our nightly show at the Bar D Chuckwagon Brigette and I returned to our new home and found the rough draft of the new Flatpicking Cookbook.
After one year there have been many changes to our lives and I have many people to thank. First of all and most important, Brigette Cook. Without her the past few months would have been overwhelming at best! To our families, we love you and can't say thanks enough. To Dan Miller and his family you have been very supportive and helpful and I don't know what else to say but we appreciate all you have done. We have many friends and strangers alike that have offered their assistance and we are grateful to all of them. And also, to our other family at the Bar D, thanks for all you continue to do ... I hope you enjoy this project and may it help you learn a few new songs and as always Keep Picking.

FRAILING THE GUITAR. Baughman. Unleashing the clawhammer in guitar fingerpicking. CD TAB.

Product Description:
The Travis pick revolutionized guitar picking in the 20th century, and frailing stands poised to do so in the 21st. This simple technique in which the thumb is employed on an upbeat, instead of on its usual downbeat, creates a driving groove reminiscent of Appalachian banjo. Frailing is a very versatile pattern that works as well with singer-songwriter guitar accompaniment as it does with fingerpicking blues and old time fiddle tunes. This is the first book ever published on the subject. Written in notation and tablature for intermediate to advanced guitarists.
